Regier and White take Madera Super Victories

By Gerald Laurie

The Supermodified Racing Association Supermodifeds and the Madera Speedway 360 Supermodifieds made up the Open Wheel divisions in Madera’s first Super Saturday Event of 2008. Track officials are running the SMRA Supers combined with the 360’s in this event.

The  SMRA Supers qualified with Troy Regier(98) fastest at 12.252 followed by Jeff Russell(85) at 12.646, Martin McKeefery(27) at 12.786, Bobby Dalton(36) at 12.815, and Dale Lamborn(48) at 12.851. The top five 360 Supers were David Tuey(6) at 13.375, Kenny White(1) at 13.449, Lance Tatro(72) at 13.369, Lance Jackson(18) at 13.563, and Donnie Large(26) at 13.601.

The 360 Supermodifieds were next up with Lance Jackson(18) on the pole for the Dash followed by Lance Tatro(72), Kenny White(1), and David Tuey(6). At the green, Tuey slid up the banking in turn 1 and contacted the wall. He left on the hook and the dash started over with three cars. Tatro took the lead on lap one with Jackson and White in tow. And that was the order at the lap four checkers as well.

The SMRA Supermodifieds Dash lined up with Ernie Coppo and Bobby Dalton on the front row followed by Martin McKeefery and Troy Regier in row two. Dalton pulled out a lead coming off turn two on lap one. Regier took second coming off turn four on lap two. Dalton won over Regier, Coppo and McKeefery.

The SMRA Heats included the 360 cars in the line ups. Heat one lined up with Mike Johnson on the pole with Lance Jackson, Mike McCann, Ernie Coppo, and Martin McKeefery rounding out the field. Jackson took the initial lead with Coppo, McCann, Johnson and McKeefery following. Coppo took the lead and McKeefery moved to fourth on lap two. McKeefery took third on lap three and then second on lap four. Coppo and McKeefery ran nose to tail with Martin making a valiant try on lap seven. However, Coppo prevailed over McKeefery, Jackson, McCann, and Johnson.

Supermodified Heat two featured David Gassett, Donnie Large, Kenny White, Justin Belfiore, Bobby Dalton, and Troy Regier. Large took the lead at the green followed by Belfiore, Regier, Dalton and Gassett. Belfiore led lap two over Regier, Dalton, Large, and White. Regier took the lead on lap three and that was the race. Regier took the checkers with Belfiore, Dalton, Large and White in tow.

Whitey Janssen paced the third Super Heat followed by Kenny Kinchen, Lance Tatro, Dale Lamborn, and Jeff Russell. Janssen led lap one over Lamborn, Russell, Kinchen, and Tatro. Lamborn and Russell both got by Janssen on lap two. Russell took the lead a lap later and Kinchen passed Janssen for third on Lap five. Jeff won over Lamborn, Kinchen, Janssen, and Tatro.

The combined Supermodified Feature Event lined up with Lance Tatro on the pole followed by Kenny White, Mike McCann, Justin Belfiore, Ernie Coppo, and Dale Lamborn. Next up were Bobby Dalton, Martin McKeefery, Jeff Russell, and Troy Regier. Behind the invert were Lance Jackson, Donnie Large, Kenny Kinchen, Mike Johnson, David Gassett, and Whitey Janssen. David Tuey scratched from the event. White led lap one over Belfiore, Tatro, Lamborn and Coppo. Lamborn lost the driveline to bring out a yellow on lap two. On the restart, Belfiore took the lead with White, Coppo, McKeefery, and McCann rounding out the top five. Regier moved to fifth on lap three, fourth on lap five, third on lap six and second on lap seven. Order after seven was Belfiore, Regier, McKeefery, White, and Russell. Russell and Dalton both passed White on lap eight when the yellow flew for Mike McCann rolling slowly down the front stretch with a broken radius rod. On lap nine, Regier took the lead and Russell passed McKeefery. Top five at ten laps was Regier, Belfiore, Russell, McKeefery, and Dalton.

Dalton took fourth on lap eleven and Russell took second on lap twelve. The yellow flew on lap twenty for a multi car spin in turn two. Belfiore headed to the pits under yellow. The race was red flagged when it was thought Large was injured, but he did continue the race. On the restart, Coppo spun in turn 1 bur rejoined the back of the pack. Mike Johnson headed for the pits at this time. When lap twenty was finally completed Regier led over Russell, Dalton, McKeefery and Coppo. And realistically, that was the race.
Except for lapping cars, there was no movement at the front except Coppo took fourth on lap forty. At the checkers, Regier won over Russell, and Dalton. Coppo and McKeefery finished one lap down.

The top five 360 Supermodifieds were White, Tatro, Kinchen, Jackson, and Gassett who incidentally finished sixth through tenth overall.

Although the car counts were a little low, the Super Sunday events at Madera look to be a great show as more cars get completed. There are six shows scheduled one per month featuring the Supermodifieds and the Midgets. The next Super Saturday is the annual Vukovich Memorial on May 10, 2008.
